Stroke

This one doesn't need a 'case study'.  In all other first aid situations there are definite things you can do to help the casualty until help arrives.  But with stroke, the most important thing is to recognise the symptoms, and to act FAST.

F   FACE - has the face dropped at one side ?

A   ARMS - can they raise both of  their arms ?

S   SPEECH - Are they able to speak clearly or is their                                 speech slurred or confused ?

T   TIME TO ACT - CALL 999 OR, IF IT WILL BE QUICKER, TRY TO TRANSPORT THEM TO HOSPITAL YOURSELF

Strokes do NOT only affect the elderly.  They, although it is less common, affect younger people, too ... so don't rule out a stroke if these symptoms are present in someone who is 'not old'.  Time really is crucial in the event of a stroke, and, with a quick admission to hospital, the effects of most strokes can be reversed completely.
